Epson Stylus Photo R2880

Epson's new A3+ photo printer - the Stylus Photo R2880 - is claimed to deliver lab-grade inkjet technology to the professional and advanced amateur photographer. It sports the latest UltraChrome K3 ink technology with new Vivid Magenta pigment inks and an improved look-up table algorithm. In other words, it has a wider colour gamut and more accurately matches those colours. Epson claims this delivers to exhibition display standards.

The printer uses eight ink cartridges, but is said to achieve upwards of 85 per cent of the Pantone colour balance used in professional circles - and this is normally only achieved with printers using 10 or more cartridges.

Black and white printing is also greatly improved. The edge-to-edge Stylus Photo R2880 features a unique mode within the print driver, which enables users to have creative control over black and white tones as well as gradation in much the same way as users can do in their darkrooms by selecting specific papers and chemicals. This is aided by an improved interface, better facilitating the user to find, change, store and even share print settings.

Teflon-coated
The Epson Stylus Photo R2880 is also claimed to deliver high-quality images at high speed, thanks to the printer's new Micro Piezo print head. This is coated with ink-repelling Teflon, which is said to make dot placement more accurate than previous models. There are three standard print settings - SuperFine (1441x720dpi), Photo (1440x1440dpi) and SuperPhoto (5670x1440dpi) - with recorded print speeds varying from as quick as 46 seconds for a 4x6” print at SuperFine quality right down to 669 seconds, for a 13x19” A3+ print at SuperPhoto quality.

Despite its professional appeal, the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 comes with a front-facing USB PictBridge port for easy access, as well as two USB2 ports at the rear for computer connectivity. It's designed to fit snugly between the popular Epson Stylus Photo R1900 and the professional-grade heavy duty Stylus Pro 3800.

The product is expected to retail at £569.99 (including VAT) and should be available this month.
